B&A is seeking a candidate to fill a full-time GIS Specialist position located in Jacksonville, or Macomb, Illinois. The ideal candidate will have the ability to lead our technical staff in developing maps, data, and other in-house deliverables as well as maintain our vast collection of local and cloud-based datasets while using their creative abilities to deliver interesting and functional web applications for our designers and clients.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzing spatial data using mapping software (primarily ESRI products and Diamond Maps).
  • Discovering patterns and trends through spatial mapping of data.
  • Designing digital maps with geographic data and other data sources.
  • Producing cartographically pleasing maps with various data types (utilities, roadway improvements, drainage areas, contours, cadastral linework, etc.).
  • Developing web mapping applications and tools using ESRI products and Diamond Maps (noncoding).
  • Converting physical maps into a digital form for computer usage.
  • Performing data munging and cleaning to convert data into its desired form.
  • Produce reports on geographic data utilizing data visualizations.
  • Managing a digital library of geographic maps in various file types.
  • Developing internal processes for project database visualization and organization.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates Degree and/or Certification in Geospatial Technology, Geography, Surveying, Engineering or related field.
  • Experience with desktop mapping tools such as ArcGIS Pro and ArcMap.
  • Experience with cloud-based mapping tools such as ArcGIS Online and Field Maps/Collector.
  • Experience with GPS and/or measuring tools.
  • Experience with SQL and database querying.
  • Strong understanding of engineering-related geospatial concepts (coordinate systems, map projections, Mapping vs. Survey grade accuracy).
  • Analytical mindset.
  • Attention to detail and good problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Good interpersonal skills.

Ideal Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree Computer Science, Geography, Surveying, Engineering or related field with an emphasis in Geospatial Technologies.
  • Experience with Municipal, Water/Wastewater and/or Transportation Engineering Industry
  • Familiarity with other engineering CAD software (Bentley and/or Autodesk Products)
  • Basic Python and/or ArcPy programming experience
  • Familiarity with Open-Source GIS Tools (i.e. QGIS, OpenLayers, Geoserver)

The ideal candidate will have the ability to assist our surveying team in performing boundary, ALTA, topographic and construction surveys utilizing GPS and Total Station instruments.
